The European Commission has selected 39 innovative projects across the EU to advance the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure. A total investment of €422 million, provided through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), will support these initiatives in driving the transition to cleaner transport.
The selected projects will focus on installing public electric recharging stations, including high-power megawatt chargers for both heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles, developing hydrogen refueling stations and onshore power installations in ports as well as electrifying airports and providing infrastructure for alternative fuels such as ammonia and methanol for shipping. This investment aligns with the EU’s broader goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance air quality, and strengthen the competitiveness of European industries.
Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas said: "The 39 projects we are supporting today will accelerate the deployment of critical recharging and refueling infrastructure needed for our expanding zero-emission fleets. Together, they will add nearly 5,000 new charging points, including 626 mega-watt chargers, helping citizens choose zero-emission vehicles and contribute to a cleaner environment."
AFIF plays a key role in expanding alternative fuel supply infrastructure across the EU’s trans-European transport network. It also aligns with the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, which promotes the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and the FuelEU Maritime Regulation, which encourages the use of renewable, low-carbon fuels and clean energy technologies for ships.
Now that EU Member States’ have approved the selected projects, the European Commission will adopt the award decision in the coming months, after which the results will become definitive. The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has started the preparation of the grant agreements with the beneficiaries of successful projects.
AFIF operates through a continuous rolling calls for proposals, allowing for the regular funding of new and innovative projects throughout the year. The current call, launched on 29 February 2024, has just completed its first evaluation round. The calls remain open and the next deadline is 11 June 2025, with approximately €578 million still available for funding.
